 Dear
If the APS issues a position statement on research findings about the theory of "memory repression" and the use of "memory recovery" techniques, the American Psychological Association and American Psychiatric Association will be forced to update their own statements and to issue guidelines similar to those issued by the Royal College.
I am writing to ask that the American Psychological Society form a working group and issue a statement about research findings regarding reported "repressed memories" of abuse, so-called "memory recovery therapy," and the hazards of suggestion in psychotherapy.
The American Psychological Society is uniquely positioned to help break this logjam of professional indifference and conflict of interest.

 Psychoilogical Anthropology by Kristin Alten
However, The Society for Psychological Anthropology remains an active part of the American Anthropological Association and work continues to be carried out at University of California, San Diego, Emory University and the interdisciplinary centers of the University of Chicago, Harvard University and University of California, Los Angeles.
Psychological anthropology is a subdiscipline of anthropology which investigates the psychological conditions that encourage endurance and change in social systems, with the goal of better understanding the relationship between culture and the individual.
Psychological anthropologists found this approach more acceptable than basic personality structure because it expressed the character of a group as being the most frequent type encountered, rather than generalizing that traits were absolute or that all of the members of a culture have the same personality structure.
