Investigative Techniques To Determine Time Of Death
Algor mortis, which means "the temperature of death" describes the cooling of the body.
Livor mortis, which means literally "the color of death" is the discoloration of the skin caused by flow of blood into the venous spaces under the influence of gravity.
In ideal conditions, the rate at which a body cools is one degree per hour.

 Coroner Stories » Body Language
The three most common physiological changes for establishing postmortem interval are algor mortis, livor mortis, and rigor mortis.
Rigor mortis refers to the postmortem stiffening of muscles.
Whereas the location of positional livor is affected by the orientation of the body, “toxic” livor can be seen in all surfaces of the skin regardless of body position.

 . : AMDECON : .
Rigor mortis or rigidity simply means the stiffness of death or the stiffening of the muscles from a relaxed state to fully inflexible.
Lividity is the settling of the blood to the lowest point on the body due to gravity.
This was one of the few cases in which an exact body temperature was very important to investigators.

 Rigor Mortis and Algor Mortis
Nysten concluded that the pattern reflected the increasing distance between different muscles and the brain, although he puzzled over the fact that decapitation didn't seem to affect the process!

The result, in 1811, was the first scientific description of rigor mortis and "Nysten's law," which states: "The progress of cadaveric rigidity is descending." That is to say, it begins with the muscles of the face, then progresses to the neck, trunk, arms, and finally the lower limbs.

 Death
For the human body, the physiological consequences of death include rigor mortis, algor mortis, livor mortis (dependent lividity) and decomposition ( decay).
While there is increasing modern study on the afterlife, acceptance of its existence or its non-existence continues to be a matter of faith.
The deceased person is usually either cremated or deposited in a tomb, often a hole in the earth, called a grave.

Brain death, which is now a legal condition in most states for declared death, requires that the following be absent for at least 12 hours: behavioral or reflex motor functions above the neck, including pupillary reflexes to testing jaw reflex, gag reflex, response to noxious stimuli, and any spontaneous respiratory movement.
These include rigor mortis, livor mortis (discoloration of the body due to settling of blood), algor mortis (cooling of the body), autolysis (breakdown of tissue by enzymes liberated by that tissue after death), and putrefaction (invasion of the body by organisms from the gastrointestinal tract).
Somatic death is followed by a number of irreversible changes that are of legal importance, especially in estimating the time of death.

 HBO: Autopsy
Leave questions for Dr. Baden at the Autopsy Bulletin Boards.
All three terms describe changes that occur in the body after death and the extent of their development may be helpful in estimating the time of death.
Algor mortis refers to change in body temperature after the heart stops pumping and cellular oxidation, which keeps our body temperatures at 98.6¡ F, stops; the body temperature falls to room temperature (about 70¡ F) at about 1.5¡ F per hour.

Rigor mortis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The biochemical cause of rigor mortis is hydrolysis of ATP in the muscle tissue, the chemical energy source required for movement.
Rigor mortis is a recognizable sign of death that is caused by a chemical change in the muscles, causing the limbs of the corpse to become stiff ("rigor") and impossible to move or manipulate.
Times for the onset of rigor mortis can vary from a few minutes to several hours depending on the temperature of the environment in which the body is found.

CHIN - Interactive Investigator - Arriving at the Scene - Place of Murder - Clue # 4 : Time of Death
For the time of death, the pathologist considers algor mortis, the cooling of the body; livor mortis, the setting of blood in the dependant regions following death; and rigor mortis, the chemical reaction that causes rigidity in the muscle groups immediately following death.
First of all, if we consider livor mortis, that is the setting of blood in the dependant regions of the body following death, we can see that all the blood has accumulated in the back of his body.
Also, if you consider algor mortis, which is the cooling of the body, again I would say that he's been dead for over twelve hours.

 Algor Mortis (Steve Harris, M.D.)
And we also need a new term, perhaps viagra mortis, for political decedents who appear to be properly their old cold selves, but not stiff.
You know, when someone dies, the reactions in the muscles which cause stiffness, aka rigor mortis, also give off some heat and you get a little rise in temperature before it states to fall.
I propose therefore that we have an official AlGore Mortis Society, dedicated to the study of political corpses that are stiff but also still warm, and therefore a source of confusion to the uneducated.

 Signs of death
In the living body muscles can function both aerobic and anaerobic.
This stiffness will not be over before decomposition begins.
Rigor mortis is a well known phenomenon, and is due to a complex chemical reaction in the body.

This is unpolished gore grind in its purest form, the likes of which haven’t been heard since 1989; essential listening to all those who thought Carcass lost their way when the 90’s hit.
Musically, TCME prove to be more than capable of handling their instruments.
We try to stay true to the spirit of forensic pathology; you won't hear us growling about eating or fornicating with corpses, because it doesn't happen, but we try to make the everyday happenings of the morgue a thematic and engrossing read.

 Jay Berner's Damned Data
Of note, when I checked the encyclopedia for "death", I learned that 'algor mortis' was the term for the drop in body temperature (frequently used to establish time of death), but 'rigor mortis' (stiffness) takes five or six hours to kick in.
She was discovered 'dead', and was stiff...implying that the time spent in such a state was probably closer to 6-9 hours.
She can thank her lucky stars it happened in Brooklyn, because in many parts of the world the standard treatment for reanimated corpses includes a stake through the heart and burial at a crossroads.
