Topic: Airway

 CHEST: Airway hyperresponsiveness
Airway responsiveness is measured using inhalation challenges with airway constrictor agonists, such as histamine or methacholine, in both clinical and research laboratories.
The degree of airway hyperresponsiveness correlates with other important variables in asthma, such as variations in peak expiratory flow rates (18) and with the improvement in FE[V.sub.1] after receiving an inhaled bronchodilator.
Another important application of measuring airway responsiveness is the diagnosis of occupational asthma.

It may be a full surgical approach or via a percutaneous needle cricothyroidotomy with high flow oxygen.
One must evaluate and assess the risk of further cord injury given head and neck movement, the degree of cooperation from the patient, anatomy and trauma to the airway and one's own expertise in each technique.
Such ideal conditions often do not exist, and local anaesthetic preparation of the airway is time consuming and might increase the risk of aspiration.

 Airway Management & Ventilation
Brachycephalic dogs are predisposed to the obstruction because of higher incidence of elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, everted laryngeal ventricles, and hypoplastic trachea.
Most anesthetics obtund or abolish the swallowing reflex, a protective mechanism to prevent accidental inhalation of foreign materials that may be present in the mouth.
This lecture covers some basic anatomy and physiology of respiratory system, the necessary devices required to perform endotracheal intubation and techniques of airway management, and basic principles of the ventilator, and how best to apply such knowledge into clinical practice.

However, it is preferable to definitively secure the airway through inline endotracheal intubation or with surgical techniques in this patient population.
Orotracheal intubation is often not practical or possible in this group of patients, in which case, the standard of care for airway management is a surgical airway.
After discussion with the family and in accordance with their wishes, no aggressive treatment was undertaken, and the patient expired.

Mid Carolina Internal Medicine Associates - Airway Emergencies
If the history of injury suggests blunt or penetrating trauma to the chest or neck, then the soft tissues should be palpated for deformities or subcutaneous air and x-rays should be obtained to look for evidence of air leaks.
With a complete obstruction, there is no sound of air movement audible at the mouth and the patient is unable to speak.
Elevating the head of the bed will reduce the blood pressure in the bleeding vessel until surgical assistance is available.
