 Understanding the Basics of Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis Uteri is a glandular derangement of the muscle of the uterus.
This theory is supported by the fact that during microscopic examination of adenomyosis in the lab, it is possible in some cases to follow the endometrium in a continuous non-broken layer from its normal location on the lining and observe it invading the muscle.
Another helpful part of the history is that the pain of adenomyosis seems to begin later in life than does the pain of endometriosis.

Adenomyosis - An Internal Uterine Endometriosis
Conservative surgery for adenomyosis is about 50% effective (24), so it is still likely that hysterectomy is more successful in treating it even though we do not know for sure what the success rate of hysterectomy is. It is probably that hysterectomy is at least 80% or more effective.
Hysteroscopy and needle biopsies of the uterus have also been used to diagnose adenomyosis (9), but they do not seem to be practical in a clinical sense because they miss so many areas of the uterine muscle where endometrial glands can be found.
Gonadotropin releasing agents (e.g., Lupron ®) can be used to treat adenomyosis but the problem is that the adenomyosis seems to recur after discontinuing the therapy.

 Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis, on the other hand, is normal glandular tissue which grows into the muscle probably because of a breakdown in the anatomic separation between the muscle and the endometrium.
The good news about adenomyosis is that it is a benign condition.
The word adenomyosis literally means glandular muscle condition (adeno- = gland, myo- = muscle, -osis = condition), and it is a very good word for the affliction.

Due to the nature of adenomyosis, which generally affects scattered areas of the uterine wall, the condition is not suitable for localized surgery.
Occasionally the pain associated with adenomyosis may radiate to other nearby areas, especially the lower back.
